05/18/2012 - Great hair stylists hard to find but Terradea Salon & Master Cuts in Wausau get 2 thumbs up

Women can be (and should be) rather picky when it comes to finding the right hair stylist. And when we find the PERFECT follicle artist, one that understands what we want and more importantly what we DON'T want- we have a hard time letting go. Quite frankly, when my favorite (and 7 year) follicle artist Michael Tobin, from Terradea Salon & Spa in Wausau, moved away several years ago, I considered road tripping the 2 hours to his new home to get my hair cut. But there was a happy ending....my Michael came back to Wausau and the world was good again. At least, until this week.

Due to some crazy scheduling conflicts, I was unable to make an appointment to get my hair cut when Michael was available. I had already stretched my last cut about as long as I could go- without switching to "hat day" everyday. So I was left with a decision- do I wait for our schedules to coincide or do I try a temporary stylist for the first time in nearly 5 years? I chose option 2 since I couldn't stand my hair anymore and was planning to go out of town - very important to look good (and more importantly FEEL good) for this particular trip. I was absolutely delighted with the results.

When shopping for a stylist I look for one main characteristic- do I like the stylist's hair? If I hate their hair, or think the style does not look good on him/her, I will keep shopping. A stylist with bad hair (or an unbecoming cut), tells me that if they don't know what looks good on themselves, how are they going to offer credible suggestions for me or anyone else? I'm probably oversimplifying a bit, but I think you get where I'm going with this. Anyhow, I choose a stylist who was recommended by several acquaintances and has great hair. I scheduled my appointment with Travis at Master Cuts in the Wausau Center Mall, and took a leap of faith.

Travis did not disappoint! He did a great job, paying close attention to my wants and asking questions to clarify that we were talking about the same type of cut. I don't speak "salon" language so it's important to make sure there is a clear understanding of what I want prior to the first cut being made. During the haircut, don't be afraid to ask questions or clarify if it looks like the stylist is taking off too much, not enough, etc. Keeping the lines of communication open during the cut can also help prevent large errors in judgement as your new hair-do evolves. So ladies and gentlemen, if you find yourself looking for a great place to get your haircut in the Wausau area, I recommend either Michael at Terradea Salon on 3rd St in downtown Wausau or Travis at Master Cuts in the Wausau Center Mall.

NOTE: I was not paid by either business to write this blog review. I offer my advice based upon years of getting compliments on my hair and wanting to share my secrets.

05/05/2012 - Hello Central Wisconsin....I'm Back

Ok- so I know that Central Night Out hasn't been as active in the last 6 months as it used to be and many of you may be wondering "what the heck is going on?" Well, life has been happening. And mostly crappy stuff- but rather than bore you with my pathetic sob story about why I haven't updated things as much as I used to, I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you how happy I am to be back! I have miss you all tremendously. This is my first weekend seeing new bands in almost 8 months so I checked out Widow's Tithe and Cougar Bait at the Kruse In last night and they were really great! I'm working on downloading pictures as we speak.

Tonight I have another very busy night lined up. First stop is the Edison Club in Antigo, which I know very little about. I'm hoping to get some more details about this venue when I get over there in a few hours. Anyhow, the lineup includes Leroy Powell, the son of Willie Nelson, and The Messengers with Meantooth Grin. Sounds like it will be a very exciting show! And after that, I'm not sure....the Mad Polecats are hitting the stage at Malarkey's and they look to be a very interesting crew. I'm blogging from El Jalapeno in Washington Square in honor on Cinco de Mayo, and it happens that the guys from The Mad Polecats are sitting next to me- we shared some Mexican Spirits (aka- tequila shots) and it's quite likely that I will stop by Malarkey's to check them out after the show in Antigo.

On the other hand, one of my favorite bands, 3 Pill Morning, is going to be hitting the stage at Elixir in Marshfield so I'm torn- haven't seen those guys in forever and I would love to say HI! Decisions, decisions:) There are so many things I'd like to do and update on the website but I guess I'll have to take it one event at a time. New bars and restaurants are opening all over the place so let me know where I need to go first so I can update everyone else! You'll hear again from me soon.
10/08/2011 - New owner turns old Mino's Italian Restaurant into B B Jack's family restaurant and sports bar

CentralNightOut.com was able to catch up with the new owner of the old Mino's Restaurant on Wausau's northeast side to find out about plans for the building. Frank Stimac, owner of B B Jack's Restaurant located at 900 Golf Club Rd, Wausau, 54403, resides in Wausau with his family and said he'd been looking for several years to open the third location of his father's business, but just couldn't quite find the right property and real estate opportunity. When Mino's went up for sale, Frank knew he'd found the perfect property to open this family owned business in Wausau.

The original B B Jack's was opened in Antigo, WI by Frank's father Robert and is a community landmark in Antigo. With a focus on customer service, B B Jack's is the perfect family restaurant; affordable, friendly service, great atmosphere and most importantly, terrific food. Initially, B B Jack's will be open for lunch and dinner but this may change based upon customer traffic. Food at this family restaurant and sports bar will have a slight focus on homemade pizza but will encompass a full menu of traditional family dining options including sandwiches, appetizers and dinners.

Frank's brother Todd owns B B Jack's in Rio, WI about 20 minutes south of Portage.

Although some details are yet to be worked out, Frank is hoping for a late-November/December opening. Updates are being made to the dining room, kitchen and parking lot to ensure a family friendly atmosphere. B B Jack's will also include a full sports bar but will not maintain normal 2am closing hours. B B Jack's prefers to meet the customers they serve in person so does not plan to offer delivery but exceptions will be made so large orders or special events. Family is important to Frank Stimac which is why their philanthropies will lean towards local schools and kids.

For more details on specials and events when B B Jack's opens their doors, check back to CentralNightOut.com for all those details plus valuable coupons and more.
The Kruse In is a well known live music venue in central Wisconsin and it's no secret that rock, hard rock, and metal....well, basically anything really loud with a great beat is the type of music one can usually hear on Friday and Saturday nights. But, the Kruse In is trying something new and have invited The Ditchrunners to perform Saturday October 1st at 9:30p.m. Tom Jordan, lead singer of Wausau band Meantooth Grin, shared a little bit about The Ditchrunners in his event invitation on Facebook.

It reads: Doug Bredlau and his band the Ditch Runners have been all over and have opened for some big bands in the biz like Hank III, Wayne Hancock, and many more. A first listen to these northern Wisconsin boys and its clear that they were influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and many of the other bad ass country playing pioneers of the genre. Show starts at 9:30PM....this is a show you won't want to miss....come on down and catch some bad ass outlaw country!

08/22/2011 - Wisconsin Rapids Balloon Rally and Music Festival to benefit the Children's Miracle Network

Wisconsin Rapids is hosting their annual Balloon Rally and Music Festival to benefit the Children's Miracle Network on August 26th - 28th. The balloon rally and music festival will be held at Alexander Field, 3620 First Street South, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. The balloon rally and festival are free- there is no charge for admission, however donations for admission, raffles and entertainment will be accepted (and appreciated). All the participating bands are donating their time throughout the weekend and with acts like Galynne and MarkOnDrums, Dark Horse, Surrender Dorthy, and The Lizards- they are well worth the donation of a few bucks to the Children's Miracle Network. This video will give you some more details about the event. I will post additional information about band schedules and other events later this week. Check back for more details.

08/20/2011 - FABFAN: Fill a Backpack Fill a Need

The annual FABFAN is happening in Wausau this morning at the National Guard Armory from 8am - 2pm. Parents that qualified for free lunch at the end of last school year were mailed tickets for each eligible child in their household, but no family in need is turned away. I remember reading that an estimated 5k students are expected to participate in this important back to school program. I wouldn't be surprised if the final number of students in need is actually much higher. If you have information for the date and time of similar programs in other Central Wisconsin cities, please email me at tparks@centralnightout.com and I will post in my blog and on Facebook. If you are in need and do not have a ticket, please come anyhow! Thank you to area residents and businesses that make this event possible.

08/15/2011 - Thank you for noticing

First - I want to say "thank you" to the individual who asked about the Hot Topics blog! It's wonderful to know that people appreciate the work we do and for someone to actually MISS my blog?!?! Makes me feel just a little warm and tingly inside. In light of this comment however, it made me realize how often we take for granted the good service we receive at the grocery store or the amazing service we got from the little retail shop down the street, or the cheerful smile we see every morning at our favorite coffee shop. Often, it's easy to get caught up in the bad things- we complain, share our bad experience with everyone we know on Facebook, and generally vomit our negative attitude all over the place. Yes, you might feel a bit better but guess what, you just shared your negative attitude with 20 people who will again share their bad attitudes with everyone.....I think you see where this is going. There is no special day to thank these people (at least no "officially" recognized day that I know of, to celebrate the men and women who work in the service industry- and I mean any kind of service)! But I encourage you to take a moment the next time you get great service to contact that worker's boss, or the owner of the restaurant/bar and let them know how much you appreciated the high standards to which they hold their employees and their great service. It will take you... maybe 2 minutes to share a genuine "thanks" but the reward will be priceless. Christmas season is when bloggers and journalists start to look for those feel-good stories to remind mankind to, well, be kind to each other. But why wait? One of my favorite quotes- and I apologize because I don't remember who this is from but I heard it years ago in a sales training class and that is, "Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?" If we always focus on the bad things and the negative, the people around us are going to do the same thing. So let's try and be just a bit more positive. Take the time to appreciate the great service you get every day rather than the crappy service you got once, in the last month. You'll probably be surprised by the side effect this behavior will have on your own attitude and outlook on life.

07/26/2011 - Otis & the Alligators play free show at The Filmore Wednesday July 27th

There has been much talk and speculation about the newly reopened Filmore in downtown Wausau. Personally, I fell in love with the venue the first time I stepped inside- but my love of live music doesn't make me the most objective person - I see what I like, and business owners must evaluate possibilities and opportunities on more objective and measurable criteria. In a meeting with Tim Schertz, CentralNightOut.com learned about some of the initial plans for the Filmore and it sounds like a recipe for success. Unsure about how much I should share about our conversation, I'll have to blog about some of the details at a later date. What I can tell you is that the amazing entertainment that The Filmore brings to town each Wednesday night for after the Concert on the Square, will always be free- or in other terms- no cover charge. Tomorrow night Otis & the Alligators will take the stage around 8pm and I repeat- there will be no cover charge! So stop by The Filmore after the 400 Block and check out Otis & the Alligators to finish off the mid week hump day!

Good Monday morning everyone! Ok- maybe not "good" since it IS a Monday but we at CentralNightOut.com have some very exciting news! You can now download coupons and get listings of specials for Little Pad Thai Restaurant. Little Pad Thai is located on the corner of Thomas Street and S 10th Ave, on Wausau's west side- in the former Sy Am Garden Restaurant location. The decor of Little Pad Thai might be quaint and understated, but the food is fantastic! Laura Soukup Sebourn had to say this about her visit, "Too bad I don't live in the state. I have traveled around and have eaten in many Thai restaurants. This one is by far the best one I have ever ate at. They might not decorate the outside or the inside simply, but the food is amazing. When I come back next year I will be stopping by again." Pictures of the menu will be available soon on their CNO profile so check back for updates. Plus, Little Pad Thai will be offering delivery service for lunch and dinner through Wausau To Go. Since they are very new, Little Pad Thai is offering only one daily special on CNO which is $2 off the Pad Thai dinner or Pad See-eew. More specials will be added throughout the summer so check back often.
06/27/2011 - THRIVE lunches help promote restaurants in the Wausau, Weston, and Rothschild area.

Many unemployed people and business owners have heard the phrase, "it's not what you (fill in the blank), but who you know." And the next question usually becomes, "how do you get to know those important people who can bring you closer to your goals?" THRIVE lunches in Wausau are the perfect opportunity to network and build relationships with Wausau area professionals who might bring you closer to your business goals. One of the most basic principles in sales is that people (businesses, individuals, etc.) buy from and do business with those they like and trust. Your chosen profession might not be in sales, but we all have to "sell" ourselves to potential employers or companies with whom we want to do business. THRIVE, which stands for Together Helping Restaurants Improve Valuable Exposure, offers a causal networking experience with scheduled lunches every Thursday at 11:30 a.m. The group changes the lunch venue each week and is scheduled to meet at Chang Garden in Weston for lunch on Thursday June 30th. Participants are able to try new restaurants they may not have visited before, and can sit with new visitors each week. The best part about THRIVE is that there are no fees or long-term commitments. Each person simply attends the lunch if they are able and if not- they come the following week. Shawn Blackwell, organizer of THRIVE Wausau, rarely brings business cards to the lunch stating that if a participant wants to talk more- he/she should just come to the lunch and sit with him next week. The group size varies from week to week but usually averages between 15 to 25 professionals weekly. Follow this link http://www.thrivelunch.com/ For more information on THRIVE or to start a chapter in your area.

After talks of reopening the Fillmore nearly a year ago failed, many residents....including myself....wondered if this amazing venue for live music would ever really open it's doors. But, the Fillmore is finally making its debut tonight featuring local band 8th World Wonder. The band is scheduled to start right after the Concert on the Square (with Johnny and the Motones from 6pm-8pm) and is looking forward to hearing reviews from the many supporters of local live music. Stop in to The Fillmore and tell Tim, the owner, you said Hi- and if you could mention that you read about The Fillmore on CentralNightOut.com- that would be cool too (wink)! Have fun tonight but be sure to drink responsibly.

Good rainy afternoon! So the kids are home for the summer...or you offered to babysit your niece/nephew while your sibling goes on a nice vacation...and thanks to Mother Nature being temperamental as usual, you are stuck inside due to the thunder storms and rain. Your first thought is probably something like, "Oh SHUCKS! The kids can't go to the pool, I have to work...now what do I do?" Well first of all, take a deep breath. Second, go to your computer and check out this URL http://www.kidsbowlfree.com. This website will outline a very inexpensive (FREE) program offered by several local bowling alleys where students can bowl up to two games per day free. FREE! That is just awesome! A few of the local participating bowling alleys include Dale's Weston Lanes (Weston), Coral Lanes (Rothschild), Day's Bowl-A-Dome (Wausau), Spare Time Lanes (Colby), Hodag Lanes (Rhinelander), and North Star Lanes (Antigo). With the help of this fabulous program, you might just make it through bad-weather-vacation-days after all!

06/13/2011 - Wausau Summer Kick-off Event Now Local Tradition

Every June, for the last 6 or 7 years (I forget after a while) my family and I look forward to the Summer Kick-off Event put on by Wausau Area Events. This event really does mark the beginning of summer for many families and there are activities for people of all ages. Despite the temporary change of location to Oak Island Park (due to the reconstruction of the 400 Block, the new sod needs time to take root and the cement needs time to cure), the music, games, and movie are taking place as originally planned. The Wausau West Jazz Band sounds off at 5:00 p.m. and Brad Emanuel and the Groovemen play at 6:00 p.m. At dusk, the movie Despicable Me will be shown outdoors on a gigantic inflatable movie screen. Be sure to bring lawn chairs, bug spray and blankets for the movie...cause it usually gets a little cold at night. As usual there will be food vendors and sponsor tents with games for the kids. This event is casual and relaxing and best of all....the entertainment is completely free. Stop out June 17, 2011 for the Wausau Area Events Summer Kick-off at Oak Island Park; event begins at 5:00 p.m.

06/08/2011 - El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant brings something new to the Wausau area

El Ranchito, located on Grand Ave in Schofield, recently opened its doors and is planning to offer some unique features at their authentic Mexican Restaurant. Starting in July, Jose Valaques, owner of El Ranchito, plans to provide authentic Mariachi Band entertainment on Friday nights every other week. They will receive the rest of their licenses after July 1st so their "happy hour" specials will begin then as well. On rotating Monday nights, El Ranchito will also begin Salsa dance lessons taught by a local dance instructor. The addition of these two great entertainment features might just be the ticket for El Ranchito's success. CentralNightOut.com is very excited to hear the band - and Tara might even stop in for Salsa lessons one night!

06/07/2011 - Malarkeys makes Mondays exciting with their summer contest

Last summer Malarkey's Pub in Wausau tried something new to keep customers coming in throughout the summer....and it worked! So, this summer, Tyler at Malarkey's is holding the same contest. Every Monday from June 6th to August 22nd, for each $2 spent after 9pm, you get a punch on a punch card. When you fill your card with punches, place your name on the back and throw it into the hat. Then get another card and start all over! Gotta love an easy contest. According to Tyler, "We have $2 domestic bottles from 9pm till close! We are giving away and IPAD2, a VEGAS VACATION PACKAGE, and Cash and Bartabs!" So you buy drinks and win stuff.....sounds like a great idea to me! But what about entertainment? We have an never ending thirst to be entertained so Malarkey's has plans for entertainment too! "We also have bands and DJ's planned on Monday's occasionally through the summer, so spread the word on Monday's at Malarkey's!" Wow, no problem. I'm spreading the word as I write this blog! Happy Summer and stay tuned to CentralNightOut.com for many more summer activities.

As a user on Central Night Out, you know how important it is to have accurate information about what's happening or what choices for entertainment & dining you have in the central Wisconsin area. I'm happy to tell you that we have resigned the Wisconsin Woodchucks for this summer and we have added a couple of restaurants and one bar for this year. Sam's Pizza, with locations in Schofield and Wausau, is our newest pizza place and lives up to its motto, "It's a family tradition". El Ranchito's is the newest Mexican restaurant to hit the Wausau area- they are located in the old El Tapatio place in Grand Ave in Schofield. And last but certainly not least, Player's Sports Bar & Grill, located on W Stewart Ave in Stettin, has joined the CNO group and we are thrilled to be listing their daily specials and live events! Please stop and welcome these new advertisers and make sure you let them know you found them on Central Night Out!

05/12/2011 - Rock n Roll Revival to support central WIsconsin band programs

In case you haven't heard about it- the Central Wisconsin Rock'n Roll Revival is an organization that puts together semi-annual concerts to raise money used to purchase musical equipment that is then donated to area band programs. The Revival has been held in a variety of venues including the Rothschild Pavillion, Fern Island, Oak Island Park (Wausau), and Dome Sports (now closed) with this years show hosted by Dale's Weston Lanes. To change things up a bit this year, the show is featuring Country music on Friday night with Saturday dedicated to Rock, blues, oldies and all the rest. The Friday night show will feature local bands Frontier (starting at 8pm) then Andy Zynda, Led West, The Jerry Schmidt Band and the Whitehouse Players. Then Saturday starts a 2pm with Denny Bloom then follows with Backseat Driver, Aaron Jay Band, The Baddowns (@4:15pm), Robin Lee & Friends, Bigfoot, The Royal Host, The NightBeats, Altenburgh & Viegut, Cruz, D'Railers (@10:15pm), Meantooth Grin (@11:00pm), Led Devils and then Cool Hand closes the show. Tickets can be purchased online (http://www.westonlanes.com/) or at the door (on both days)- Ticket cost is $10 each day if purchased separately or $15 for both days. And just so we don't loose the purpose of this event in my wordy blog, it's to support area band programs. Ya know, I was a band geek in school. I played the tenor sax from 6th grade, on and I was good too! I never really thought to write and thank Mr Kramer (yes- Dennis Kramer from Marshfield) for the amazing trips he took us on while I was in high school- but I learned so much from those trips, this blog has inspired me to actually write and let him know what an impact those experiences have had on my life. Marching in the 1989 Inaugural Parade in DC - and spending a week between New York City and Baltimore was truly the most amazing and eye opening experience that I'm having a difficult time putting my thoughts into words. The bottom line however, is that with school budget cuts and programs being eliminated, the fine arts programs need our help more now than they ever have. I can't begin to imagine how different, uninspired, and gray my jr. high and high school years would have been without music. Please help support local band programs and visit the revival this weekend.

05/11/2011 - Best of Central Wisconsin contest

So CentralNightOut.com is all about promoting businesses in the central Wisconsin area - to support the local economy - because despite what many residents believe....there really are many entertainment options available for families, couples, singles, and all the above, right here in central Wisconsin. Many of the local communities (like Wausau and Marshfield for example) have a "Best Of" contest where people can vote for their favorite pizza place, best bar burger, best fish fry, best Bloody Mary, etc. But the thing is, although there is a small amount of change from year to year- possibly a new restaurant has entered the mix- usually the contest winners are the same each year. I say, let's create some friendly competition and have a "Best Of" for the central Wisconsin area that would include all the local communities! My question to the users on Central Night Out is: would you vote and would you participate if CNO sponsored an area-wide event like this? If so, what are some of the categories we should include? Your thoughts? Personally, I'd like to see an online survey that customers would fill out with basic ratings on service, cleanliness, quality of food, length of wait, and cost of meal/value ranking for each business participant. With an open category for best bartender, or live music, biggest beer selection, etc.

05/11/2011 - Small Business Solutions for Questions Internet Marketing

I know how difficult it can be for small businesses to manage their ad budgets while still trying to reach their target audiences - but just not sure how to do it. First, there is no quick fix and if someone tells you they can get you "X" number of new visitors to your website and a #1 organic ranking in 30 days or less....tell them thank you - and that you will consider their proposal, and hang up the phone because they are pulling your leg! There are some very simple things that small businesses can do (that are not hard or time consuming) but knowing which strategies to focus on when you have little experience or knowledge about online marketing, can be a bit overwhelming. My name is Tara Parks and I'm the owner of CentralNightOut.com, LLC, and I can help you understand how online marketing can benefit your business (even if you are not a bar or restaurant) or I can just consult with you about your existing strategy and determine areas for improvements and new ways to engage your customers. Our initial meeting & online needs assessment is free so call(715) 581-9950 or email tparks@centralnightout.com for more details. If you are interested in some online statistics about who is really using the Internet, which media source has the strongest ad revenue, and what are the ages of users on Facebook, follow this link for an enlightening presentation http://bit.ly/gGNGE9

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. "I may look like just an ordinary guy," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die and I will inherit $200 million." Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother. Women are so much better at financial planning than men!

A local Texarkana, TX fellow had a brilliant idea to make money stealing a car, intending to take it to a Dallas chopshop. Ole' Fudd isn't the brightest spark plug in town, though. He went to the Honda dealership, asked to test drive a car, then went to Wal-Mart and made a copy of the key. Later that night he went back, unlocked the car, cranked it up and drove away. Clean break. He got to Dallas without any trouble and that's where his lame brain got him in the soup. He stopped at Dairy Queen and ordered a meal. He then decided to jack the restaurant for the price of his HungerBuster. He drove away and the manager called the police. When he was pulled over it was discovered that the car he was driving was stolen. He, of course, what charged with absconding with the burger and felony auto theft. Way to go, Fudd!

I heard this joke and thought it was the perfect way to honor moms everywhere! Being a mom means you never have to say "what am I going to do with all this free time?" Another joke I read on the Readers Digest website: HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD: My husband, Jeff, and I incurred several problems while assembling our new computer system, so we called the help desk. The man on the phone started to talk to Jeff in computer jargon, which confused us even more. “Sir,” my husband politely said, “please explain what I should do as if I were a four-year-old.” “Okay,” the computer technician replied. “Son, could you please put your mommy on the phone?” – Contributed by Lena Worth retreived from: http://www.rd.com/family/funny-jokes-about-moms/

Caution: They walk among us! I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, 'Has your plane arrived yet?'... Happy Cinco de Mayo

04/27/2011 - CW Residents long for intimate musical experience

It's no secret that central Wisconsin residents LOVE their live music. Don't get me wrong, DJ's rock the house - but there is just something more personal...more intimate, about watching musical artists sculpt, and interpret, and recreate their master pieces at each show. Devouring the enthusiastic cheers from the audience, the artists bare their soul at each performance. Often, seasoned artists will test the waters of their audience, trying to find the perfect mix of venue, song choice, pace, volume, & audience interaction to find out what will make the crowd bite. It takes practice & skill to create an experience for the audience that not only makes them want to dance and sing, but leaves them with a permanent memory of where they were, who they were with and what they were doing when he/she first heard that song. Sometimes, the crowd's needs are very basic: they want a cover band that will play songs they can dance to and sing along with. Other times however, the audience is starving for a much deeper experience...they want to hear original music & experience the intimacy that's created by an artist while sharing his/her passion for the art of music...while giving away just a little bit of their soul. CentralNightOut.com has been following several local bands, including Meantooth Grin, in an effort to help promote local (central WI) live music. Earlier this year, Meantooth Grin and The D'Railers recorded their first live albums at Wausau venue, Kruse In. No release date has been announced for either album, but rest-assured they are coming out soon! Below is a small appetizer to help tide you over until the complete, seven-course meal is served. Enjoy- and share this blog with your friends!

04/21/2011 - Tippy Cup Tournament Abares Marshfield

I asked the question on Facebook a few weeks back about why so many bars do beer pong tournaments but no one does Tippy Cup, and Abares in Marshfield took the hint! April 22nd Abares Outer Limits is hosting a Tippy Cup tournament. Cost is $5 per person with 4 players per team. Tournament starts at 8pm. Tippy cup is WAY more fun, and interactive than beer pong so if you're tired of the same beer pong tourney's- stop by Abares on Friday night and try a new game! Don't forget to tell 'em you heard about it on Central Night Out!

04/16/2011 - Rasmussen College Student's band, The Mad Mad Ones, Debuts in Wausau at Glass Hat

Rasmussen College student, Paul Bender, has waited for this day for a long time. The Mad Mad Ones officially became a band around April of 2010. The current lineup is: Teddy Fox- Guitars and Lead Vocals Paul Bender- Bass Guitar and Backup Vocals Nick Bretl- Drums (written by Paul Bender) The Mad Mad Ones came to be out of drummer Nick Bretl and Guitarist Teddy Fox's late night jam sessions. Nick and Teddy have been friends since they were kids, having lived next door to one another in Antigo, WI. After many jam sessions, Nick and Teddy started writing songs and made the decision to start a band. They were missing one very important piece-the Bass Guitar. Nick put up a Craigslist add looking for a bass player, which Paul Bender answered. After a few jam sessions with this new bass player, Bender, things started to fit. Finding the right Fit is very important with such a small and tight-knit group. Needless to say, Teddy, Nick, and Bender, have become good friends and play well together. The Mad Mad Ones are not your typical Central Wisconsin band. In a scene dominated by Numetal bands, The Mad Mad ones are a breath of fresh air. They combine the best elements of rock, 1990's grunge, and indie rock into a powerful sonic assault. Cleaver lyrics, simplicity, and pure rock and roll drive combine to form a very listenable experience for the audience. Be sure to see The Mad Mad Ones at The Glass Hat, 1203 3rd Street, Wausau, This coming Saturday, April 16.

04/15/2011 - 3 PIll Morning comes back to central Wisconsin

3 Pill Morning, from the Twin Cities, is finally making a trip back to the central Wisconsin area and I encourage you to check them out. I'm not very good at making band comparisons, but if you like Seether, Nickleback, Puddle of Mud, Staind, and that genera of music, you will love 3 Pill Morning and their co-stars (tonight anyhow) 60th Cycle. 60th Cycle released their latest CD in January 2011, and has been touring the region since the release. Check out the video below for a sample of 3 Pill Morning. This song was taped at Club Venom, Marshfield, in October 2010. 3 Pill Morning is at the Kruse In tonight, Friday, April 15th, and will be in Marshfield at the Elixir, on Saturday April 16th. Enjoy the show and make sure you tell Koz (their manager) & Jeff (lead singer) that you heard about their show on CentralNightOut.com!

CentralNightOut.com is an online entertainment directory with listings for bars, restaurants, bands, hotels, community orgs, sports teams & more...in the central Wisconsin area. I'm Tara Parks, and I'm the owner of CentralNightOut.com. CNO has been around since October 2009 and we are growing every day! The Hot Topics section of CNO is a place for me to blog about whatever strikes my fancy. I really love live bands and so many of my blog posts will highlight new bands or CD release parties, and will also include a link to the band profile. The profile is where you read about how the band started, who's in it, where they play, what they play, pics of the band and you may even find samples of their music. Check back often to learn more about the Featured "Band of the Week" and how your band could become the next featured band. You can contact me at 715-581-9950 for more information about creating your band profile or listing your show dates! Rock on central Wisconsin!

For example, on Saturday, April 9th, Marathon Park is featuring a free kids expo from 9a.m. till 3p.m. in the East Hall entrance. Some of the activities happening tomorrow are child safety, face and finger painting, sensory tables, clowns, and much more!
04/02/2011 - To pay or not to pay: discussion on cover charges for entertainment

It's funny that residents in central Wisconsin think that a $2 or $3 cover charge for a band- is outrageous. I realize that I'm generalizing, because I've met many people who realize that $2 is nothing when getting quality entertainment. But, the general consensus among bar owners is that if they charge more than a $3 cover for a band, the turnout will be about half of what they expected. So what is it about the cover charge that makes patrons re-think visiting their favorite watering hole? We practically BEG to be entertained (because there's nothing to do here), & yet we don't think we should have to pay for it. But why do we feel this should be free? I mean, do any of you have any idea how much the equipment for a band costs? Or the sound system expense- to maintain it and then hire someone to work the sound board while the band is playing? You see, despite the fact that music is a hobby for many bands, the expense of equipment is still high. What if your hobby was pottery, and you were asked to put on a demonstration or a class, and everyone is going to get to participate- but they don't want to pay anything for the class- or to be entertained for 4 hours! It sounds ridiculous, right? So why do people complain so much about paying a stupid $2 cover for a good band at a bar? Your thoughts???

Local rock cover band, SLAB, premiered at The Corral Bar in Abbotsford last Saturday night with a surprising addition to their band, and Slab version 16.0 is even more awesome than they were before. Together (as Slab) since 1995, original Slab members Todd (lead guitarist & lead vocals) & Troy (bass player) have searched for the right mix of talent & work ethic (minus the oversized egos) to take the band to the next level; it seemed they would never find the perfect drummer or rhythm guitar. In 1997 drummer Al Sternitzky of Marshfield joined the band and it was instant chemistry. Despite finally finding the perfect drummer, Slab still experimented with a variety of guitar players to add depth to the band. But after several failed matches, Slab decided to take some time off to re-group and decide how they were going to rekindle their enthusiasm & add some new life to their shows. They say that great things happen when you least expect them....well the addition of a female lead singer was certainly unexpected & based on her performance Saturday night, will be exactly what Slab needed to add some new life to their shows. Cindy Kearns, newest Slab member, was amazing singing everything from Pink, to Queen, to No Doubt- and she didn't miss a note! I've been a fan of SLab for a long time and the chemistry between Cindy and band seemed so natural- you'd have never known it was her first show with the band. I'm certainly looking forward to more Slab- for a listing of their upcoming shows, visit thier website at http://www.slabrocks.com Slab will be at the Kruse In, Wausau on April 22nd, and at Rose Bowl, Marshfield, on April 23rd.

03/26/2011 - Entertainment in Central Wisconsin

I'm always amazed when people I meet tell me that there is "nothing to do" in central Wisconsin. My response is "You just aren't looking close enough" because I can tell you (with certainty) that there is so much to do here, you should never be bored. For example, its Saturday afternoon and you'd like to do something with the family but you're tired of doing what you always do. Biggby Coffee, on Bridge St., is featuring a new Jazz band called Crazy Ivan, from 2pm-4pm. If you haven't been to Biggby Coffee yet, you are in for a treat. With a warm, friendly atmosphere, this coffee shop is bright and cheerful with a fireplace and lounge chairs - the perfect place to do something different with your family that won't cost you a fortune. Stop out this afternoon and see Crazy Ivan, and keep an eye on Central Night Out- we are continuing to grow and add new bands and advertisers each week. We'd love to hear your thoughts about entertainment in central Wisconsin-

As the owner of CentralNightOut.com, I have participated in Thrive lunches in the Wausau area since December 2010, to support local restaurants and create new business networking choices. What is Thrive? Thrive stands for Together Helping Restaurants Improve Valuable Exposure, and the Wausau Thrive group meets every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 or 1:00. Thrive coordinators, Shawn Blackwell & Steve Steffke, started the group as a casual networking opportunity to show their support for local restaurants. With no membership fees or meeting dues, Thrive is affordable and fits into almost anyone's budget...you need to eat, so lets meet! For more information about Thrive, or to find out how you can start a Thrive group in your area, visit: http://www.thrivelunch.com/

03/23/2011 - So Tell Me...if you could do anything right now (besides shoveling snow) what would it be?

I can tell you that if I could be doing anything today- besides shoveling snow, I'd probably be at the movies. I love the escape from reality that a good movie provides. Sometimes it's just as nice to pick up a book and get lost in a really good story, but today feels like a movie day to me! How about you?

So, how about this weather????? I guess if we can't have real spring we can pretend to have spring and think warm happy thoughts....... hot sand, sunny beaches, coconut oil, cute cabana boys (or girls for my male audience) & all you can drink cocktails.....See it's working already. Now, if everyone wore yellow, we could have real spring!
